Despite all the rain in Sydney at the moment, it's time to prepare your home for Spring. We have curated this list of spring cleaning tasks that are often forgotten or put aside. A thorough spring clean is crucial to making sure your home's air is healthy to breathe. Dust and allergens that build up over the long winter need to be removed, especially with the onset of Spring's allergy season.
1. Clean forgotten corners
When you spring clean, you can take care of those areas you overlook daily. As you tackle forgotten areas of your home, like cracks and corners for cobwebs, you'll progress into Spring with a clean house and a clearer mind.
Not sure where to begin? Make a list of what you want to accomplish first rather than overwhelming yourself. Spring is the perfect time for a much-needed clean-up. You can balance the workload by taking it room by room or appliance by appliance. Even though there are some obvious places we should be cleaning, many pesky places may not immediately come to mind.
2. Wash windows from inside out
Wash your windows with clean, cool water mixed with a few drops of dish soap to remove surface dirt or residue. Follow up with a commercial cleaning product (like Windex) or a solution of white vinegar and water. Dry the windows with a clean, lint-free towel, newspaper pages or paper towels.
3. Wash ceiling fans and tops of wardrobes
The build-up of dust on surfaces can cause various unwanted issues in your household, including health problems, eye irritation, throat irritation, and skin irritation. Particularly with fans, dust build-up on the fan's motor can not only cause a safety issue but could affect your warranty. As a result, it is incredibly important to ensure your ceiling fan is clean and dust free throughout the year, especially if you are using your summer/winter mode.
4. Declutter wardrobe
Decluttering and simplifying your wardrobe or clothes will improve your mood, so now's the time to reorganise your wardrobe in preparation for Spring. You can donate or sell the clothes you no longer need. Top tip: put your winter clothes into a box and store them safely in your loft or garage until next year.
5. Fertilise and seed garden
It is enough to entice anyone to do spring gardening when the temperature is warming up, and a flurry of activity is in the garden. Early Spring is the best time to remove pesky weeds because, at this point, the roots of these uninvited guests are still shallow, making these easy to remove. You can prevent weeds from overtaking your yard by adding mulch around trees.
Check and clean drains and areas where leaves may have accumulated. This will ensure that rainwater will have a runoff path.
6. Deep clean couch and carpet
Treat your furniture like an investment with a regular deep clean. Doing so extends your furniture's life and will make it more valuable if you decide to sell it in the future.
It's always worth deep-cleaning upholstery before considering replacing dull and dirty furniture. Dust and grime build up over time, especially if you have children or pets. A professional deep clean removes this build-up safely and effectively.
7. Vacuum curtains and window blinds
Simply removing dust from the curtains can refresh their look. By doing this regularly, you can delay the large-scale cleaning. It is important to know how to use a vacuum for regular dirt removal: once the dust penetrates the fibres, removing it with vacuum treatment will not be possible.
